Remarks:
The high alpine start right next to Schoberboden (Upper station from Reißeck Bergbahnen) is probably one of the best thermalling locations in upper Carinthia. Heights from over 3000 meter aren’t very rare here! Therefor this area is mainly used for long distance flying. Thermals can be very strong in spring. Reißeck is only recommend to experienced pilots (with a license ofcourse) during this saison. Because of the high altitude from the start big distances are possible even in September and October!

Start

With the cogwheel train you will drive up to station „Schoberboden“. During the ascend you will have a breathtaking view on the summits from the Hohen Tauern! The cogwheel train will gain 1516 meters, on a partly 82 percent slope!

Landing

The landing area is at around 2 minutes on foot from the valley station of the train. Parking is possible near the station. Please be careful, there is a strong valley wind quite often. Because of the big height difference between start and landing, usually the landing area’s Göriach (Eastern direction, around 8 kilometers) and Obervellach (Western direction, around 10 kilometers) can be reached (on quiet days) without thermalling!
